Bidding is where Amazon PPC profit is won or lost. Bid too low and your ads never show — no impressions, no data, no sales. Bid too high and you win clicks you cannot afford, burning cash on every irrelevant search. The skill is finding the number between: the highest bid you can pay for a click and still hit your target ACoS. This guide shows you the formulas, the placement math, and the weekly routine to keep bids optimized in 2026.
Max Bid = Price × Conversion Rate × Desired Margin %
| Input | Example |
|---|---|
| Selling price | $39.99 |
| Conversion rate | 10% (0.10) |
| Desired margin after ads | 20% (0.20) |
| Max bid | 39.99 × 0.10 × 0.20 = $0.80 |
An alternative formulation using target ACoS:
Max Bid = Price × Conversion Rate × Target ACoS
With target ACoS 30%: 39.99 × 0.10 × 0.30 = $1.20. Start bids at 70-80% of the ceiling and raise or lower based on two weeks of real data.
Amazon lets you set a base bid per keyword, then apply placement modifiers. The effective bid:
Effective Bid = Base Bid × (1 + Placement Modifier %)
| Placement | Modifier range | Typical behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Top of search (first page) | 0% to +900% | Highest CTR and conversion; competitive CPC |
| Product pages | 0% to +900% | Cheaper clicks, lower conversion |
| Rest of search | 0% to +900% | Lowest intent, cheapest |
| Mode | Behavior | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic bids – down only | Lowers bid up to 100% when conversion unlikely | Broad, discovery, and weak-converting campaigns |
| Dynamic bids – up and down | Raises bid up to 100% for top-of-search when likely to convert | Proven keywords you want to scale |
| Fixed bids | No adjustment | Exact-match control campaigns with stable data |
Max bid = price x conversion rate x target ACoS (or x desired margin). Start at 70-80% of ceiling and adjust on data.
Start at $0.50-$1.00 for most categories or use Seller Central's suggested range, then optimize weekly.
Dynamic 'down only' for discovery campaigns, 'up and down' for proven keywords, fixed for exact-match control campaigns.
Modifiers adjust bids up to +900% by placement. If top-of-search converts better, raise its multiplier and lower others.
Weekly. Adjust in 10-30% steps and give Amazon time to re-rank.
