Amazon DSP (Demand-Side Platform) is Amazon's programmatic ad-buying platform. Put simply, it no longer confines you to advertising on Amazon.com - you can run ads across the entire internet: CNN, BuzzFeed, Pinterest, Twitch, and even connected TV.

For a deeper dive, see our DSP advertising guide. Comparing ad platforms side by side? See the Amazon PPC vs DSP comparison.

DSP is nothing like the Sponsored Products most sellers run day to day, and the barrier to entry is far higher. In this guide I explain, from a seller's point of view, what Amazon DSP actually is, whether it is worth doing, and how to go about it.

1. DSP vs Sponsored Products: The Core Differences

DimensionSponsored ProductsAmazon DSP

One look at the minimum budget tells you the story - DSP is not built for small sellers. If you are doing under $50K a month, get Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands performing well before you even consider DSP.

2. The Four DSP Ad Formats

Display ads

Standard banner ads, served on Amazon and on partner sites. This is the most basic DSP format. Inventory includes the Amazon home page, the sidebar of product detail pages, and placements across more than 100 off-Amazon sites. CPM (cost per thousand impressions) usually runs between $1 and $8.

Video ads

Served on Amazon (Fire TV screensavers, for example) and on off-Amazon video platforms. Video is the fastest-growing DSP format, with CPMs around $8-$20. Keep spots to 15-30 seconds and make them feel on-brand.

Connected TV ads (CTV / OTT)

Delivered to Fire TV, Roku, Samsung Smart TV and similar devices. A 15-30 second, non-skippable ad plays while users stream content such as Freevee or IMDb TV. CPMs run about $15-$30. Best suited to larger sellers in a brand-building phase.

Audio ads

Audio spots placed inside the free tier of Amazon Music. Listeners hear your brand message between songs. CPMs run about $10-$20. Conversion is the hardest thing to measure in this format, but the reach is broad.

3. When a Seller Should Consider DSP

In my experience, these are the situations where launching DSP is genuinely justified:

  1. Your on-Amazon ads are saturated: you have already optimized Sponsored Products as far as it will go, and every extra dollar of budget sends ACoS through the roof. DSP can find you fresh audiences at that point.
  2. A new product launch needs brand awareness: if you are launching into a category where users do not yet know your product, DSP is a very effective way to buy brand exposure.
  3. Warm-up before a major sale event: switch DSP on 3-4 weeks before Prime Day or Q4, cultivate the target audience first, then harvest that demand with Sponsored Products during the event itself.
  4. Free traffic is drying up: if organic results in your category keep getting more commercial, you need DSP to hold your brand's visibility.

4. The DSP Budget Barrier and the Alternatives

Amazon's official DSP minimum is a $35,000 prepayment. For most small and mid-sized sellers that is not small change. If your budget is tight but you still want to see what DSP can do, there are two alternatives:

5. What DSP's Data Can Actually Tell You

The biggest thing DSP gives you is not the ads themselves, it is the data. Through Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC) you can run analysis that Sponsored Products simply cannot do:

Use ylishi.tools PPC Analyzer You also get cross-attribution data between Sponsored Products and DSP, which helps you judge how much DSP is pulling the whole funnel.

6. What to Actually Expect from DSP

Do not let a DSP agency oversell you - DSP's direct ROAS is usually lower than Sponsored Products. Its value shows up in three places:

When you judge DSP, do not look only at direct ACoS - factor in the brand halo effect as well. Overall, DSP's total ROAS (direct plus indirect conversions) typically lands in the 2.0-3.5 range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amazon DSP advertising?
Amazon DSP (Demand-Side Platform) is a programmatic advertising platform that lets you buy display, video, and audio ads both on and off Amazon. Unlike Sponsored Products, DSP targets audiences based on shopping behavior rather than keywords, making it ideal for brand awareness and remarketing.
How much does Amazon DSP cost?
Amazon DSP requires a minimum budget of $35,000 for managed service or $10,000 for self-service. Self-service DSP gives you more control and lower entry cost. For most small-to-mid sellers, start with Sponsored Products and Brands before investing in DSP.
When should I use DSP vs Sponsored Products?
Use Sponsored Products for direct conversion from search results (lower funnel). Use DSP for brand awareness, remarketing to product page viewers who didn't buy, and reaching shoppers off Amazon (apps, websites). DSP is best for brands with $50K+/month revenue.
What is sponsored ranking on Amazon?
Sponsored ranking is the paid position in search results: sellers bid in an auction and the highest relevant bidder gets the top sponsored slot for that query. It is separate from organic rank — a listing can hold a top sponsored ranking while its organic position sits on page 2, which is why product launches usually run PPC and SEO in parallel until organic rank catches up.
