Amazon DSP Advertising & Programmatic Buying Guide
Amazon DSP (Demand Side Platform) is Amazon's programmatic ad-buying platform. It lets advertisers bid in real time and serve display ads both on Amazon and across the open web.
The Core Differences Between DSP and Sponsored Products / Sponsored Display:
| Dimension | SP/SD (self-serve) | DSP (programmatic) | |------|-----------------|------------------| | Management | Self-serve in Seller Central | Requires a DSP account manager | | Minimum budget | From $1/day | Usually from $35,000 | | Ad placement inventory | Amazon on-site | On-site + off-site (millions of sites) | | Targeting | Basic audiences | Advanced audiences + data segments | | Attribution model | Last click | Multi-touch attribution | | Best suited to | All sellers | Brand sellers + ad agencies |
DSP Ad Inventory Types:
• Amazon-owned inventory: Amazon.com, Amazon APP, Fire TV, Twitch
• The Amazon ad network: third-party websites and apps that partner with Amazon
• Twitch live-streaming platform: in-stream and display ads during game streams
• Fire TV: smart TV splash and pause ads
• IMDb: display ads on movie-database sites
DSP Ad Formats:
• Display ads: standard banners, skyscrapers, medium rectangles
• Video ads: pre-roll and in-stream video
• Audio ads: audio spots on Amazon Music
• TV ads (OTT): TV spots on Fire TV
• Custom creatives: highly interactive brand-built units
The DSP Skill Barrier:
A DSP account normally has to be opened through an Amazon-certified agency, or by working directly with Amazon's DSP team. The minimum prepayment is $35,000, which suits larger sellers spending $10,000+ a month on advertising.
The core value of DSP is not the ads - it is the audience data and what you can do with it.
Audience Data Sources Available in DSP:
1. Amazon first-party data:
• Shopping behavior: buyers who searched, browsed, purchased, or added to cart
• Lifestyle: interests and preferences inferred from purchase history
• Demographics: age, income, household status, education level
• Brand engagement: users who follow the brand, browse the storefront, or buy review.
2. Advertiser-owned data (Advertiser Audiences):
• CRM data: import your customer email list (hashed before upload)
• Pixel data: track website visitors with the Amazon Pixel
• App data: track in-app user behavior through the SDK
• Storefront visitors: browsing and engagement data from your brand store
3. Third-party data:
• Purchase-intent data: category purchase intent from third-party panels
• Life-event data: moving house, getting married, graduating and similar transitions
• Interest data: interest categories based on browsing behavior
DSP Audience Funnel Strategy:
• Upper funnel (awareness): third-party audience segments, goal is reaching new users, CPM $3-$8
• Mid funnel (consideration): Amazon category shoppers + browse targeting, CPM $8-$15
• Lower funnel (conversion): brand remarketing + cart abandoners, CPM $15-$30
Where DSP Attribution Wins:
DSP offers view-through attribution:
• A shopper who buys within 14 days of seeing the ad is credited to DSP even without a click
• That measures ad impact far more completely than the last-click model used by SP/SD
• View-through usually reports 2-5x more conversions than click-based attribution
DSP needs a systematic strategy before it produces meaningful ROI.
DSP Campaign Strategy Framework:
Strategy one: new-customer acquisition
• Goal: reach shoppers who have never bought your brand
• Audience: Amazon category shoppers + third-party interest segments
• Creative: brand imagery + product selling points
• KPI: new-customer share above 60%, plus CPA under $20
Strategy two: brand building
• Goal: grow branded search volume and brand recognition
• Audience: category interest segments + life-event audiences
• Creative: brand video + brand story
• KPI: branded search volume up more than 20%, view completion rate above 70%
Strategy three: remarketing for conversion
• Goal: convert shoppers who browsed but did not buy
• Audience: product viewers + cart abandoners + branded search users
• Creative: product imagery + offer messaging
• KPI: ROAS above 5x, conversion rate up more than 30%
Strategy four: seasonal promotion
• Goal: maximize sales during peak season
• Audience: all relevant category audiences + past promotion buyers
• Creative: promotion messaging and discount highlights
• KPI: ROAS above 8x during peak season ACOS under 20%
Suggested DSP Budget Allocation:
• New brand or new product: 40% brand building + 40% new-customer acquisition + 20% remarketing
• Established brand: 30% new-customer acquisition + 40% remarketing + 30% seasonal
• During peak season: raise the total DSP budget by 2-3x
• Brand-building campaigns should run at least 3 months before you judge results
Measuring DSP is different from measuring SP/SD - you need a broader set of metrics.
DSP Measurement Framework:
Awareness-layer metrics:
• Impressions: the volume of audience reached
• Viewability rate: share of impressions that were actually visible, target above 70%
• Unique reach: number of distinct users reached
• Frequency: average number of times each user sees the ad - keep it under control, ideally under 4 per week
Consideration-layer metrics:
• View-through search volume: the lift in Amazon searches for your brand after users see the ad
• Branded search lift: the change in branded search volume before and after the DSP flight
• Detail page views: product detail page visits from users the ads reached
• Add-to-cart rate: share of reached users who add to cart
Conversion-layer metrics:
• View-through conversions: purchases within 14 days of an impression
• Click-through conversions: purchases within 30 days of a click
• New-customer conversion rate: share of customers buying your brand for the first time
• New-customer CPA (customer acquisition cost): the cost of acquiring one new customer
Reading a DSP Attribution Report:
• View-through attribution typically accounts for 60%-80% of total DSP conversions
• The view-through conversion window is 14 days, longer than for Sponsored Products
• DSP's value is not only direct conversion - it also reaches new customers and lifts branded search
• When you review DSP reports, look at click-through and view-through attribution together before judging performance
