Amazon FBA Fee Rates 2026: Complete Breakdown

Amazon FBA charges sellers multiple fee types that together can consume 30-50% of your selling price. Understanding each fee category is critical for pricing your products profitably. The calculator above automatically computes all fees using the official 2026 Amazon FBA rate card. Below is a detailed explanation of each fee type.

Referral Fees (6-45% by Category)

Amazon charges a referral fee (commission) on every item sold. The rate depends on the product category. Most categories charge 15%, but electronics are 8% (for the portion under $100) and 15% above $100. Amazon device accessories carry the highest rate at 45%. Jewelry is 20%. The referral fee has a minimum of $0.30-$1.00 depending on category. This fee is deducted from your selling price before you receive your payout.

FBA Fulfillment Fees (2026 Rate Card)

Fulfillment fees cover picking, packing, and shipping your order. They are based on the product size tier and weight. As of April 17, 2026, Amazon applies a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on top of the base fulfillment fee. Small Standard items (under 6 oz) start at $3.45. Large Standard items (1-2 lb) cost $5.82. Small Oversize items (up to 50 lb) start at $7.55 plus $0.38/lb above the first pound. The calculator above includes the 3.5% fuel surcharge automatically.

Monthly Storage Fees

Amazon charges monthly storage fees based on the volume your inventory occupies, measured in cubic feet. Standard-size items are charged $0.78/cu ft during off-peak months (January-September) and $2.40/cu ft during peak months (October-December). Oversize items are $0.56/cu ft off-peak and $1.40/cu ft peak. These fees are in addition to fulfillment fees and are charged regardless of whether your items sell.

Inbound Placement Fees (2026)

When you ship inventory to Amazon fulfillment centers, you may incur inbound placement fees depending on the placement option you choose. Minimal placement costs $0.15-$0.50 per unit for standard items. Partial placement is $0.35-$0.98. Amazon-optimized placement has no fee. These fees are often overlooked by new sellers but can significantly impact margins on low-priced items.

Aged Inventory Surcharge (Long-Term Storage)

Items stored for more than 181 days are subject to aged inventory surcharges. The rate escalates the longer inventory sits: $1.22/cu ft at 181-210 days, up to $6.90/cu ft at 366+ days. A new tier added in 2026 charges $7.90/cu ft for items stored 456+ days. Use the storage duration dropdown in the calculator to model these charges.

Return Processing Fees

Amazon charges a return processing fee for customer returns above the category-specific return rate threshold. The fee is 20% of the referral fee, capped at $5.00 per SKU. For example, if your referral fee is $3.00, the return processing fee is $0.60 per returned unit. The calculator above estimates this based on your return rate input.

How to Reduce Your Amazon FBA Fees

Reducing FBA fees starts with choosing the right size tier. Even small reductions in packaging dimensions can move a product from Large Standard to Small Standard, saving $1-3 per unit. Other strategies include: using Amazon-optimized inbound placement (free), maintaining healthy inventory turnover to avoid aged storage surcharges, pricing items under $10 to qualify for the low-price FBA discount ($0.86/unit savings), and monitoring your return rate to stay below the threshold for return processing fees.

FBA vs FBM: Which Is Cheaper?

FBA is typically cheaper for items under 2 lb that sell frequently, as Amazon's fulfillment network is highly optimized for standard-size products. FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant) becomes more economical for heavy or oversized items where FBA fulfillment fees are prohibitive, or for slow-moving inventory where storage fees would accumulate. Use our FBA vs FBM comparison guide for a detailed breakdown, and our FBA Profit Calculator to model both scenarios side by side.

Common FBA Fee Mistakes Sellers Make

Mistake 1: Ignoring dimensional weight. Amazon charges by dimensional weight (L×W×H ÷ 139) for large items. A lightweight but bulky item can cost more to fulfill than a heavier compact one.

Mistake 2: Forgetting storage fees on aged inventory. Inventory stored 181–365 days incurs $1.22–$4.44 per cubic foot, and 365+ days jumps to $7.90. Use our storage calculator to model long-term holding costs.

Mistake 3: Not accounting for return processing fees. Since 2024, Amazon charges 20% of the referral fee (capped at $5/SKU) for returns in apparel, shoes, and other high-return categories.
