Every 2026 FBA fee change in one diff — fulfillment, fuel surcharge, storage, aged inventory.
Amazon's October 2025 announcement shipped three changes in 2026, and they compound: a +$0.08/unit fulfillment fee increase on January 15, a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on April 17, and aged inventory surcharges starting 90 days earlier (181 days, down from 271). Net effect: per-unit fulfillment costs run 5-12% higher than 2025 depending on your size tier. Two things also got cheaper — Extra-Large fulfillment fees dropped ~$2.08/unit and Q4 storage dipped to $2.25/cu ft — but for most standard-size sellers this is a net cost-increase year.

Amazon's own framing: fulfillment fees rose "an average of $0.08 per unit, or less than 0.5% of an average item's selling price" (official 2026 fee changes summary). True — but the average hides the fuel surcharge and the aged-inventory acceleration, which is where slow-turning catalogs get hurt.
The per-unit bump landed mid-January and is tier-dependent: Small Standard items priced $10-50 took +$0.25/unit in some configurations, Large Standard took roughly +$0.05-$0.24 depending on weight band, and items over $50 took +$0.31 to +$0.51 under the new High-Price tier. Extra-Large items actually got cheaper by ~$2.08/unit — Amazon rebalancing toward bulky-goods competitiveness.
What it means for a typical catalog: if 80% of your units are Large Standard, budget an extra $0.20-$0.30/unit vs your 2025 baseline. On a $30 product at 25% net margin, that's roughly 0.7-1% margin compression before you change anything.
Modeled on industry moves like the USPS rate hikes, Amazon added a 3.5% surcharge on all FBA fulfillment fees effective April 17, 2026. It applies only to fulfillment fees — referral, storage, and inbound placement are untouched. For standard-size items it averages $0.17/unit (range $0.15-$0.35). Example: a $4.75 Large Standard fulfillment fee became $4.92.

The biggest sleeper change. In 2025, surcharge exposure started at 271 days (~9 months). In 2026 it starts at 181 days (~6 months). The tier ladder now reads: 181-270 days at $0.30/unit territory, a new 12-15 month tier at $0.30/unit ($6.90/cu ft), and 15+ months at $0.35/unit or $7.90/cu ft (whichever is higher). Slow-turning SKUs that used to get a 9-month grace window now get 6.
Practical response: tighten reorder logic to 60-day covers for anything aging past 120 days, and use removal strategically — removal fees actually dropped $0.20 this year, making the exit cheaper than the surcharge for dead stock. Our FBA storage fees guide breaks the full ladder with monthly math.
Balanced reporting, three items: Extra-Large fulfillment fees fell ~$2.08/unit on average (Amazon's play for bulky-category share), removal/disposal fees for sub-0.5-lb items fell from $1.04 to $0.84, and Q4 standard storage dipped from $2.40 to $2.25/cu ft — worth ~$1,200 vs $1,295 per 500 cu ft over Oct-Dec. Hurt most: Large Standard-heavy catalogs (the most common tier), sellers with slow-turning inventory now entering surcharge territory 90 days sooner, items priced just over $50 (new High-Price tier), and bulky sellers not enrolled in Ships in Product Packaging (new $2.07/unit SIPP non-compliance fee).
Barely affected: Small Standard fast movers under $50, Extra-Large sellers (fees went down), and sellers already on AWD with clean 60-day inventory turns. Inbound placement rose only ~$0.05/unit average — details in our inbound placement fee guide — and the low-inventory-level fee threshold moved from 28 to 35 days of cover, which actually gives lean sellers slightly more room.
Four levers, ranked by effort-to-impact: (1) Package engineering — drop Large Standard to Small Standard and save $0.40-$0.80/unit, more than the entire 2026 increase; (2) Price pass-through — a 0.8-1.5% increase on sub-20%-margin items; test elasticity first; (3) Inventory discipline — 60-day covers on anything past 120 days aged, because the 181-day cliff is now the real deadline; (4) PPC efficiency — recovering 3-5% ad spend waste equals the surcharge on most accounts.
