IOSS & OSS Guide 2026: Import One-Stop Shop for Non-EU Sellers

Published July 27, 2026 · 8 min read
TL;DR: IOSS lets non-EU sellers collect EU VAT at checkout and clear customs faster. Registration is free through a single EU member state. Mandatory for goods under €150. Without IOSS, customers face delays and surprise customs fees.

What is IOSS?

The Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) is a simplified VAT scheme introduced by the EU for non-EU sellers. It allows you to collect, declare, and pay VAT on all B2C sales of imported goods under €150 through a single monthly return — avoiding the need to register for VAT in each EU country.

IOSS Registration Process

  1. Choose an EU intermediary country — typically Netherlands, Ireland, Estonia, or Germany. Many sellers choose Netherlands (simplified process).
  2. Register for IOSS — submit application through your chosen country's tax authority. Registration is free. Processing takes 2-4 weeks.
  3. Get your IOSS number — a unique identifier you must display on customs declarations and at checkout.
  4. Set up your checkout — calculate and display EU VAT based on the buyer's country. Use the destination country's VAT rate.
  5. File monthly returns — by the end of each month, report all IOSS sales and remit VAT collected.

What Amazon Does for IOSS

For goods valued under €150, Amazon automatically collects and remits VAT on behalf of non-EU sellers through their IOSS registration. This means:

Important Considerations

🇨🇳 For Chinese Amazon sellers: Amazon handles IOSS for FBA. For direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales via your own site, register for IOSS through an intermediary like SimplyVAT or Taxually (€200-500/year). This covers all 27 EU countries with one registration.
